El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve: A zoned MPA
El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve is a zoned MPA, assembled from several gray whale refuges dating from 1971 when Laguna Ojo de Liebre was made the first whale refuge by Presidential decree. Laguna San Ignacio, first protected in 1979, and also part of the biosphere reserve, is the core of the reserve – the only primary gray whale breeding/calving area in México that remains unaltered by industrial development. In Nov 1988, the entire lagoon complex was officially designated a UNESCO Man and the Biopshere Programme (MAB) biosphere reserve and World Heritage site status followed in 1993.
